e-BOOK for students in T'ganu

MB: Terengganu can finance e-books for pupils

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government is prepared to finance the Education Ministry if the latter intends to equip primary school pupils with Internet-enabled digital notebooks or e-books nationwide.

Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the state could provide credit terms to the ministry for the procurement of the e-books.

“Terengganu was given the rights by Intel Corporation to market its e-book in South-East Asia. Before marketing the product in other countries, we are eager to give first priority to our children. This is why I initiated talks with Education Ministry officials,” he said after a tour of Kenyir Lake recently.

Ahmad said that a factory assembling the e-book started operations recently and could increase production to meet any demands.

“If the Education Ministry is interested, we can switch on our button to ensure our kids have the privilege of going digital,” he said.

Ahmad said the factory in Gong Badak here had received an initial order of 300 units from an Iranian purchaser.

“Malacca and Sarawak have also shown interest and we anticipate they will place orders soon,” he said.

Ahmad said, with e-books, the burden of lugging heavy schoolbags would be eliminated.

He said the state had allocated RM30mil to provide e-books to 25,000 Terengganu pupils sitting for the UPSR exam this year.

The content of the e-books was authorised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. Similar facilities will be extended to pupils in other levels in stages, he said.

The state would include religious curriculum and Mandarin in the e-book in the next phase, he added.

On the possibility of pupils surfing through pornographic site on the e-books as they are connected to the Internet, Ahmad said the state had addressed the issue via expertise from computer mavericks.

“We have employed a pool of technicians, two in each district, to provide technical support to schools using the e-book as a learning tool,” he said.

He said some 500 teachers in the state would be coached on the use of e-books this year.
